Long family road trip 2013: Day 3

After a lovely hotel buffet breakfast, we took off to see some sights in Portland. We started with the aerial tram, an attraction recommended by a list of things to do with kids in Portland.  It appeared to be a method of commuting for all but a few tourists. The kids enjoyed the short ride up and back and I couldn't help think of the old movie "ten little Indians" where someone dies in an aerial tram.

Then we took the streetcar into downtown. First stop pioneer square where the kids figured out they were in for a day of walking around.  They were not happy.

We dragged them down to the waterfront and walked them along the river for a while. We took a break at VooDoo donuts, a very hip and trendy donut shop in old town. After a 20 minute wait in line,  we enjoyed the ridiculous creations.

Then we took off again looking for tiny horses that were supposedly on the street as some kind of art installation.  We didn't find any but did find a small park and then later Jamison square where kids in bathing suits frolicked in a giant fountain designed for such a purpose.

Then we took the street car back to the food carts for lunch. Another trendy activity but decent food eaten in another public square.

Back at the hotel I napped while Michael took the kids swimming. Then we drove to my high school friend Carin's house where some other friends from Samohi were meeting us. It was really good to see them all, meet their families and hear about the last 20+ years.   I was very glad we did it even though the kids were exhausted and cranky.  All in all, a good day.

Greg and Ian Dodge.
