Rainbow is over the rainbow
When we returned from Calistoga, I went to check on Rainbow who hadn't eaten in a day or so and had been acting strange for about a week. The last few times I had checked on him, his eyes were sealed shut (something that I've seen with cats who have upper respiratory infections.) I got his eyes opened and gave him some fresh fruit, but he still didn't look so good. I warned the kids his end was most likely near.
So today when I opened up his cage to see how he was, I wasn't terribly surprised that he was dead. Apparently I was more sad than I thought I would be (who likes it when animals die?) but I didn't take it as hard as Miranda. (Parker and Elizabeth didn't really care at all.) Miranda just burst out into tears and kept crying for a long while. She asked why he died and why I didn't take him to the vet if I knew he was sick. She didn't understand why almost 3 years old was old for a hamster. She asked when we would get a new one. (Never was what I didn't tell her.)
But then she recovered and came to say her goodbyes. When Michael returns from a movie, we're gonna give him a little funeral.
Bye bye Rainbow.

Oh that face, so sad. RIP Rainbow.
Rachel, more than once I remember asking you for help when a cat was failing and needed our intervention to go. Yet one of my favorite memories of you was when you came to me and said we were going to "stop" with Raspberry, a mama cat I tried desperately to bring back to health but it wasn't meant to be. You let me sit with her in a cushy vet chair while Dr. Atid administered the necessary Rxs. You were so compassionate, so understanding of what I was feeling - I'll never forget that day. Thank you for that. Virginia
