Giant Jam Sandwich

One of our latest books is the Giant Jam Sandwich. It's a fun read about a town that has a bug problem and deals with it via a very large sandwich. They trap some wasps in jam. I remember it from when I was young which makes sense since it was written in 1972.

I find the second last page a bit odd...

"But they (the wasps) never came back to Itching Down,
Which is not a waspish sort of town
But a very nice plae to dance and play
And that's what the villagers did that day."

So.....are they are jews?? Is the author trying to say something here? It seems too clever to not be deliberate. But who knows.
