Basic Math

Parker has started to do some basic math. Addition mostly. 1 + 2 = 3. 5 + 5 = 10. We were playing with the abacus today and I was showing him how each row is 10 beads, divided into two colors. We added to 5 and then 10. He didn't seem to get it at first, but then when I said, 20 + 10 is 30, so what is 30 + 10 and he said without blinking 40, that he most have gotten some of it. We went all the way to 100 that way.

Then later in the day were were listening to a CD where track 19 and track 38 are the same song (the crawdad song...you get a line and I'll get pole, baby.) Sort of randomly, I said, Do you know what 19 + 19 is? And, again, without missing a beat, said 38. Since there is no way in hell he could add 19 and 19, this kinda freaked me out. I'm hoping it was just a coincidence related to the tracks, but who knows.

He also started to count backwards in different languages. 10-1 in German, 20-1 in French. He has to think about it a bit more, but he gets it.

Oh, and last night when he was kinda hyper and Michael and I wanted to chill, we asked him to count backwards from 100 to 1. And he did.
